LOST IN A DEAD GOLDEN AGE!
...another look at BRING YOUR OWN SET FORMAT.

What if Look-Alike Squad had been printed in DC Superman Man of Steel expansion DSM?
What if Man of Steel could have been better?
Why wasn't there a Jor-El card?
Why wasn't there a location card named Krypton?

These questions have plagued me for over a decade.

VS SYSTEM, is a beloved dead card game created by Upper deck 2004-2009. My friend Brad and I, have played a horde of bring your own set format some years back. Bring your own set meaning, pick a set and you may only play with those cards in your deck. Unfortunately, DSM only had 165 cards. The average set, 220 cards. So..
What does your 55 card DSM2 expansion look like?

Superman Clone Deck (B.Y.O.S)

Characters (26)
4 Lois Lane Star Reporter
4 Superman Red
4 Superman Clark Kent
4 Superman Blue
4 Superman Kal-El
4 Superman False Son
2 Superman Man of Steel

Plot Twist (24)
4 Super Speed
4 Man of Tomorrow
4 Origin Story
4 Look alike squad
4 Stopped Cold
4 Solar Powered

Locations (10)
4 Cadmus Labs
4 Fortress of Solitude
2 Phantom Zone

The problem with this deck is how do you consistently see Look-Alike Squad? You don't. The only way to search for this is if you made your own cards Hmmmmmm..................

Back in 2004, I was sorely disappointed with how bad the original Man of Steel set was. I play-tested DSM more then anybody else I knew. I just couldn't believe, that an entire Superman set could be under powered, let alone unplayable. It was so bad that in the first DC Modern Pro Circuit Tournament very few Decks ran anything from DSM.

I was even part of a group back in 2009 to revamp DSM set alongside Cliff & Squire from The Ring Has Chosen Podcast. We had too many differences. I blame myself for being a pain in the arse...

After years of obsessing, I realized we should never have attempted to redo that set. Instead DSM needed a 55 card expansion. Expansions could be FAN-MADE just like issues are issued in the comic books. Just like, Netrunner has Data packs. Just like, Munchkin follows with a few expansions such as Munchkin Zombies comes out & then has 2 or 3 expansions. Man of Steel issue #2,3 etc...

There are several ways I could see this working.

1) Make certain already made cards legal for DSM
2) Make actual new cards.
3) all thee above.

So there is thee... nutshell. The question now then, can a Superman clone deck compete with Secret Avengers Reservist from Marvel Universe?

lets see...

Superman Deck

4 Lois Lane Star Reporter
4 Jor-El Ghost
4 Superman Red
4 Superman Clark Kent
4 Superman Blue
4 Superman Kal-El
4 Superman False Son
2 Superman Man of Steel

4 Super Search
4 Man of Tomorrow
3 Origin Story
4 Cadmus Labs
2 Phantom Zone
4 Look alike squad
4 Solar Powered
2 Fortress of Solitude
1 Krypton
1 Last Son of Krypton
1 Krypton Codex

There are a couple rules I have with this concept:
1) No cards should be remade. The DSM set is essentially cannon. No matter how bad it is.
2) New Cards should be made to help existing cards.
3) For DSM NO LEGACY cards should be added post LEGIONS. Meaning, DC Worlds Finest set shouldn't merge with DSM for B.Y.O.S. I would exclude the DC exclusive set from this rule.

I have worked on this project off and on for many years now. I anguished over it. I procrastinated over it. I understand, it doesn't matter. I just couldn't help myself. I see how Versus System could have been redone, saved even... That is what Superman does. But, it would seem Superman couldn't save VS SYSTEM!

Here are some others, Goodnight!
